Community Cookbooks: An Insightful Glimpse Into the Past (and Present!)

  • Prince Memorial Library 266 Main Street Cumberland, ME, 04021 United States (map)

With crowd sourced recipes and hints at local history in every page, community cookbooks are a window into the kitchens of the past. As creators of the award-winning Maine Community Cookbooks, Margaret Hathaway, Karl Schatz, and Don Lindgren have a unique perspective on these humble, historical treasuries. In this conversation, the three will discuss what they love about community cookbooks, why community cookbooks are such valuable historical artifacts, as well as important community building blocks for the present and future. They will talk about how their appreciation for community cookbooks grew with the compilation and editing of the Maine Community Cookbooks, their podcast, Cooking is Community, and the new nonprofit, Community Plate, a story sharing and potluck supper project that has grown out of their work. Refreshments—from historical North Yarmouth recipes!—will be provided. Registration is NOT required for this event.
