Community Plate invites you to come to The Corner, a free monthly evening of community storytelling held each month at LA Arts in Lewiston.
JUNE THEME: "How Sweet It Is: Stories of Queer Joy & Resilience,” featuring chef & author, Justin Burke!
June is Pride Month, and together with Great Falls Pride, we're celebrating queer voices and uplifting stories from the queer community about resilience and joy. Maybe your story of resilience or joy is explicitly queer--for instance, in spite of pushback, you and your friends successfully started a Gay-Straight Alliance at your high school. Or maybe it's more subtle--for example, your experience of remaining true to yourself as a queer person and how it helped you persevere through some other kind of struggle. How did the light at the end of the tunnel keep you going? What inspired you to choose joy over despair? Do you have a story about a loved one who helped you through tough times? A story about celebrating a hard-fought success? Or maybe you have a joyful story that is uniquely yours to share. Our featured storyteller for the evening will be Justin Burke, queer food activist and author of the newly released book, Potluck Desserts: Joyful Recipes to Share with Pride. Justin will be signing copies of his book, which will be available for purchase at the event. Our dessert potluck for the evening will feature several recipes from Justin's book! And don't forget to bring your own dessert to share with pride!
As always, the themes at The Corner are just a starting point, an opportunity to take a story idea in any direction. Come to The Corner: Come listen. Come tell. Show your pride!
New to The Corner this year: Bring a dessert to share! In addition to pizza from DaVinci’s, we’ve added a DESSERT POTLUCK! Bring something sweet to share with your fellow storytellers and story listeners.
Each evening of The Corner includes several featured storytellers, who volunteer in advance, and because everyone has a story to tell, an open mic portion, where there is the opportunity for anyone to get up and tell a story. If you would like to be one of our featured storytellers send us an email at community@communityplate.me
Stories should be five minutes (or less), first person, fundamentally factual, and free of handheld notes. For more information about how to tell a story at The Corner, visit: https://www.cometothecorner.com/tell
The Corner is a free community event. No tickets or reservations required.
